Interaction between a mother and daughter using the more usual model of communication which involves memory and language
The first short video on this page is an interaction between a lady and her daughter that takes place in a residential home. In this interaction communication between the two was heavily reliant on memory and language. It is apparent this style of communication can lead to stress, frustration and upset for both the lady with dementia and her daughter. It is at this point that many relatives and friends stop visiting because they feel the patient does not 'even know I am there'. This can lead to further withdrawal and extreme isolation for the person with dementia. |

Interaction between father and daughter using the Think Sense model we advocate at Nature Therapy CIC The second video is of an interaction between a gentleman with vascular dementia and his daughter. With vascular dementia, as opposed to other types of dementia, you retain your sense of smell. The gentleman was encouraged to smell a rose. He could not remember the name of the flower but said the smell was of love. He then burst into spontaneous song. Music is stored in a separate part of the brain to language. No reliance on memory or language. Both the father and daughter were in the moment. Being in the moment is all there is with dementia as often there is no clear memory of a past, or any perception of the future. |
