The Hay Box is our double horse trailer beautifully converted into a mobile kitchen unit. It is called the Hay Box because instead of an oven it contains an old fashioned style Hay Box used in the past to slow cook delicious food without the use of fuel.
The Hay Box contains a four ring gas burner, fully functional fridge, hot and cold running water, two sinks and a seperate portable compost toilet. The mobile kitchen can be connected to mains electric if required. We use The Hay Box as part of our projects and courses. It is available for hire for private use for parties, festivals, weddings and fund raising. All fees from hire go direct to our work with people with a dementia. For more information on this resource, please contact us direct at [email protected] |
The Hay Box OutreachWe are in the process of developing our work to provide outreach cooking facilities using our mobile kitchen. . |
The Hay Box ProjectFrom February 2023 we are running a project called the Hay Box as an extension of our Artful Drumming Cafe. The aim is to help families on low income find ways to save money. This involves running workshops at our Artful Drumming cafe in Newport, Isle of Wight. Workshops include creating a Hay Box thermic cooking system, growing in small spaces, knitting, and recycling clothes. Kindly funded by Awards for All Community Lottery so all workshops are free of charge with breakfast included. April 2023 Update We have progressed the project to meet an identifieed need . We are working to deliver a thermic cooking programme for those who are in temporary accomodation without access to cooking facilities. We are working alongside Foodbank and Two Saints homeless outreach to make thermic cooking systems available for those who would benefit the most. If you would like to volunteer to help us set up the cooking systems then do please contact us direct. Your help will be much appreciated. July 2023 Update We are delighted to announce we now have our own allotment to work from where we are currently busy preparing for winter growth of vegetables suitable for thermic cookery and a variety of herbs for taste and well being. Pop by for coffee and see what we are doing. or visit our FB Page - The Island Herb Garden. We will shortly be erecting a geodesic dome to enhance the growing period. We will make sure we keep ypou updated by providing a video on how to create and erect a geodesic greehouse using broom handles and clear package wrapping. There is no water or electric on site so we are open to ways to ensure savings in these areas. We are situated behind Asda in Newport and can be found there on a wednesday so pop us a message if you want to visit. We can then put the kettle on. |
